Forgive My Reluctance

Luke 11:29-32

29As the crowds increased, Jesus said, "This is a wicked generation. It asks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. 30For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one[a] greater than Solomon is here. 32The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.

The Sign of Jonah

Driving home recently I saw the moon hanging on the horizon, a great orange disk with wispy clouds crossing it in an almost artistic manner. It was so magnificent it proclaimed to me "God is here."

We all would like to witness signs and wonders in this time of war and economic and political turmoil, as did the Jews in Jesus' time. And yet he berated them for seeking miracles, stating that the only sign that they would receive is the sign of Jonah.

And what is this sign of Jonah? It is the prophet's call to repentance. Just as Jonah called the Ninevites to repent, so Jesus, greatest of all the prophets, calls people of every age to turn from their wicked ways and come to him.

Once we hear and heed this call, we will not need to look for signs and wonders. We will find them all around us.
